Scratchd

Notes that stay plain files in a folder you choose

Scratchd keeps every note as an ordinary file in a folder you pick. Markdown, plain text, JSON, YAML and Proto, with a browsable JSON tree, a schema viewer and a side-by-side diff. No account, no analytics, no subscription. $4.99 once.

Top comment

Scratchd started as a plain Markdown editor four months ago and went through nine versions before this one, none of them for sale. Each added whatever was most obviously missing: the scratchpad, tasks, links, the journal, then the structured viewers. This is the tenth, and the first worth charging for.

The problem is narrow. Notes are often half prose and half config. A paragraph about what a service is meant to do, then the JSON it actually returned, then a .proto file you're trying to understand. Most notes apps treat all of that as text, so the JSON is a grey wall and the schema is unreadable.

The decision everything else follows from is that the file on disk is the truth and the app is derived from it. Every note is an ordinary file in a folder you choose. Scratchd reads that folder on every launch and reconciles against what's actually there, so a note you edited in Vim gets picked up rather than clobbered. You can grep the folder, put it in git, or stop using the app entirely and lose nothing.

No account, no analytics, no crash reporter. Swift and native, and the only third party code in it is a YAML parser and a markdown library.

$4.99 once. iPhone, iPad and Watch are in review.

If you already run a plain text setup, I'd like to know where this breaks.

Happy to send an App Store code to anyone who wants to try it before buying, just say so and I'll DM you one.

Who hunted Scratchd?

Scratchd was hunted by Innovatory. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it.
