I built RealTranslate after a frustrating trip to China where every translation tool I relied on (Google Translate, DeepL, even some VPNs) stopped working the moment I landed.
The idea is simple: a translation tool that just works, everywhere, without requiring an app download or a technical setup.
A few things I'm particularly proud of:
- Voice-to-voice translation using Whisper, directly in the browser
- Live video subtitles during calls (no Zoom plugin needed)
- End-to-end encrypted chat where each participant reads messages in their own language
- Automatic DeepSeek fallback for users inside China, where OpenAI is also unreachable
It's been a solo build — Next.js, PostgreSQL, WebRTC, deployed in France for EU data residency.
