RATS

Tag your DJ library by sound, and find what to buy next

RATS is a desktop app for DJs with large, poorly-tagged libraries. It listens to every track on your own machine, labels genre, mood, instruments, and vocals, and proposes tags from what your library contains. Discovery searches about 18 million Beatport and Bandcamp tracks by sound, starting from a track, tag, or set you own. Tags and sets sync into Rekordbox, Serato, Engine DJ, and Lexicon. One $50 purchase for macOS and Windows, with a 14-day free trial.

Hi Product Hunt, I’m Neel. I’ve spent twenty years digging for records, and more than fifteen writing software for a living.

I built RATS for myself. I remember records by how they sound, not by what they’re called, and once my library passed tens of thousands of tracks, a record I couldn’t name was a record I couldn’t find. My various attempts at organization over the years didn’t fix it. I wanted to search my library by sound.

RATS started as an auto-tagger. It listens to each track on your own computer and labels genre, mood, instruments, vocals, and sonic texture. It learns from every tag you accept or reject, and Find Tags proposes new tags for the parts of your library nothing describes yet.

Once the tags were good I wanted them in the app I play from, so RATS writes tags and sets straight into Rekordbox, Engine DJ, Serato on macOS, and Lexicon. Then I kept asking the same question about my favorite records: what else out there sounds like this? That became Discovery, which searches about 18 million Beatport and Bandcamp tracks by sound, starting from a track, a tag, or a whole set.

Analysis runs on your machine for free, and your music never leaves it. The app is a one-time $50 purchase. Discovery is the one part that costs me money to run, so it’s $5 a month after the three months that come with the app. If you have a big library and don’t want to wait on your own hardware, credits run the analysis on cloud GPUs, and 2,500 come with the purchase.

The trial is 14 days and 300 tracks, no card. I’d like to hear what you’d want it to do next, especially which DJ app or store is missing.

Who hunted RATS?

RATS was hunted by Neel Rao. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
