RateGuard is a lightweight, self-hosted API rate limiting service for modern applications. It centralizes rate-limit decisions behind a simple HTTP API and supports token bucket, fixed window, and sliding window algorithms with Redis and Lua. Hey everyone,
I built RateGuard because rate limiting often ends up being implemented separately inside every service, with different rules and different Redis implementations.
RateGuard takes a simpler approach: applications call one HTTP endpoint, it makes the rate-limit decision, and the application decides what to do with ALLOW or DENY.
It currently supports token bucket, fixed window, and sliding window, with Redis + Lua for atomic operations, a web dashboard for managing rules, Docker deployment, and Node.js/Python SDKs.
The project is open source, and I'd love feedback from anyone building APIs, microservices, or developer infrastructure.
