Hey everyone, maker here.
I started building Quire while writing up my thesis. Every time I sat down to work on it, I ended up fighting the setup instead of writing: MiKTeX and TeX Live both have a genuinely complicated install process, and package management on top of that was its own project. I wanted something that just compiled on my machine with zero setup.
So Quire embeds Tectonic (a Rust LaTeX engine) directly in the app instead of shelling out to a system install. You get real completion for labels, citations, macros, and packages, a snippets panel for dropping in common LaTeX structures like tables, figures, and equations without typing them out by hand, and a PDF preview that updates as you save. A curated package bundle ships with the app so common documents compile clean out of the box, and anything else installs on demand, no separate package manager to wrestle with. It's local-first end to end: no account, no cloud compile step, nothing that needs network access to get a document open and building.
It's open source and MIT licensed. I wanted it to actually be usable and modifiable for coursework, papers, and teaching material, not locked behind a subscription.
Currently on macOS and Linux, with an iPad version in progress sharing the same Rust core. Would love feedback, especially from anyone who's fought with a LaTeX toolchain before. What's still missing for your workflow?
