Quillwright
A distraction-free writing en designed to work alongside AI
A distraction-free writing environment for novels and long-form fiction, built on plain Markdown and designed to work alongside AI agents
I'm Fabio, and I built Quillwright because I wanted to write fiction with AI agents without
handing my book over to them.
Tools like Claude Code and Codex are surprisingly good at helping with long-form writing:
checking continuity, keeping character sheets up to date, drafting a scene you're stuck on. But
they work on files, and most writing apps either lock your text in a database or fight with
anything that changes the file behind their back.
Quillwright is a native desktop editor that takes the opposite approach:
📁 Your book is just a folder of Markdown files. One file per chapter, one per character, one for the rules of your world. No database, no hidden metadata, no lock-in. It works with Git and any other tool.
🤝 Made to run next to AI agents. It watches the folder and reloads changes from the agent safely. If you have unsaved edits, you choose what to keep. It never silently overwrites your text.
✍️ AI suggestions are shown as diffs. The built-in assistant panel calls Claude Code, Codex, or Ollama (no API keys stored in the app). Nothing enters the manuscript until you accept it.
📖 A calm, book-like page. Live Markdown styling, Paper/Sepia/Night themes, focus mode, typewriter scrolling, word goals, autosave, and version history.
📤 Offline export to Word, EPUB, PDF, OpenDocument, and HTML, built in. No pandoc, nothing downloaded.
It's free and open source (MIT), written in Rust, and available for Linux, Windows, and macOS.
The Windows and macOS builds aren't code-signed yet, so you'll see a warning the first time you open them.
It's early, and I'd love your feedback:
- If you write with AI, how do you do it today, and what gets in your way?
- What would you need before using this for a real manuscript? (Spell checking is next on my list.)
Thanks for checking it out! 🙏
