My Co-founder was a freelancer (before we came up with Prolanse). He was working on his clients’ projects as he used to. At any given time, he used to work on a maximum of 3 projects. But recently, he got 2 more opportunities that he couldn’t refuse. He took those projects, and now he had 5 projects to work on, with 2 completely new projects that he would be working on from scratch. He is a full-stack developer but mainly focused on frontend and sometimes relied on AI for backend. But now, with the increase in work, he needed help. He asked me for a backend engineer to design the backend for his projects. He started working on the projects, but as we progressed, our work got messy and the communication with clients got messy as well. He used to manage his work manually with Google Docs, spreadsheets, etc. As the work grew, our time got more stuck on managing the work rather than actually doing the work. We lost productivity significantly. This led to chaos and extended project deadlines. Unfortunately, he lost 2 of his clients. The issue here was not that we didn’t have the skills for the project. If that was the case, we would have hired someone or outsourced the project in the first place. The issue was managing multiple projects for multiple clients. I talked in detail with my Co-founder about the problem, and he told me that we often faced these issues, and it killed him, wasting so much productive and important time on managing work rather than doing it. Hence, we decided to come up with something that would manage our projects and clients for us, and a freelancer would only focus on developing the project. We wanted frictionless deliverables for our clients and no headaches for us as well. We made the system and added a few features, but then we thought, why not make it public and let all freelancers use it? We wanted to make it completely free and open source, but we found out there would be huge server costs that we would have to bear while scaling the product. So we communicated with a tech product advisor, and he strongly recommended not making it open source and instead offering both free and subscription plans for users in order to cover server expenses as well as the engineering costs required for adding new features and maintaining the platform. This is how we came up with Prolanse
