Plainsay

Local dictation for Mac

Plainsay is a free, open-source menu-bar dictation app for Apple silicon Macs. Whisper or Parakeet runs on your Mac; text is pasted where you started speaking, or left on the clipboard if that's not safe. ~12 MB, no account, no telemetry.

Hi PH! I built Plainsay because I dictate a lot (in Polish and English) and wanted something that runs entirely on my Mac. You hold a key, speak, release, and the text lands in the window you started in. If Plainsay can't confirm that window is still active, it leaves the text on the clipboard instead of pasting it somewhere random. Speech recognition is local (Whisper or NVIDIA Parakeet), so in Local mode no audio leaves your Mac. No account, no telemetry, MIT-licensed. There's an optional paid cloud mode for cleanup/translation, but the local app is complete on its own. It's macOS 14+ on Apple silicon. I'd love feedback, especially on languages other than English and on long dictations. Code: https://github.com/conrader/plai...

Who hunted Plainsay?

Plainsay was hunted by Konrad Sierzputowski. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it.
