pickaru

Swipe to pick a movie, show, dinner or board game together

Ends the "what should we watch / eat / play" argument. One person deals a deck of movies, shows, cuisines or board games, friends join with a code, swipe privately (yes / no / maybe / veto), and results unlock for everyone at once. Free, ad-free, no install.

Hi Product Hunt 👋

pickaru is a free web app for the argument every friend group has:

what should we watch / eat / play tonight?

How it works. One person deals a deck — a movie night, a series to binge, what to eat, or a board game — from moods, streaming providers, IMDb rating and runtime sliders, or by hand-picking titles. Everyone else opens a 6-letter code on their own phone and swipes each card **privately**: yes / no / maybe, plus one veto for the thing you genuinely can't sit through. Nobody sees anyone's votes while swiping, so the loudest person doesn't anchor the room. When the last person finishes, results unlock for everyone at once: a full match if you all said yes to the same thing, otherwise the ranked shortlist — or a roulette that only spins on what the group already liked.

Four decks, one pipeline:

· 🎬 movies and 📺 shows (connect your trakt account to deal from your collection and hide already watched)

· 🍜 eats (cuisines & cravings — decide the food first, pick the place after)

· 🎲 dice (board games, dealt from your own BoardGameGeek shelf if you connect one).

What it isn't: not an app-store app (runs in the browser, installs to the home screen), no account required (guests join and host, upgrade to an email later and keep your history), no ads, no AI picking for you — it's purely "help five people agree in two minutes".

The honest parts. It's a solo side project on a free stack: film & series data from TMDB, ratings from IMDb, games from BoardGameGeek, all with attribution. The eats deck is cuisine-only for now — the nearby-restaurant mode is built but parked until the map data is fresher.

Things I'd love to hear from you:
- Which deck would you actually open first — and which is missing?
- Is private voting + one veto the right amount of politics, or too much?
- What would make you reach for this over a group chat poll?

Try it with your crew tonight: https://pickaru.com — I'll be in the comments all day.

Who hunted pickaru?

pickaru was hunted by Maja Dobnik. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
