AI makes it harder to know whether an online account represents a real person. Personhood Credential gives apps a privacy-preserving way to verify that a user is human, unique, or meets requirements such as age or nationality — only when that context requires it. Users keep their credentials in their wallet and present only the proof an app needs.
Hi Product Hunt 👋 I’m Alex, the maker of Personhood Credential.
I started working on this because something fundamental about the internet is changing:
For a long time, applications could roughly assume that an account represented a person.
With AI agents, bots, account farms, and automated content, that assumption no longer works.
But I don't think the answer should be forcing everyone to reveal their identity.
So I built Personhood Credential around a different idea: **prove only the human fact that matters in a specific context.**
An app might need to know:
👤 Is this user a real human?
1️⃣ Is this a unique human, so one person can't create 100 accounts?
🔞 Is this person above a required age?
🌏 Does this person meet a nationality or eligibility requirement?
The application gets the proof it needs without necessarily learning the user's full identity.
The system has two sides:
• **Credential Wallet** — users hold and present their personhood credentials
• **Presentation exchange** — apps request and verify the specific proof they need
I see this as infrastructure for things like human-only communities, voting and polling, anti-Sybil systems, age-gated services, developer platforms, and eventually interactions involving AI agents acting on behalf of real people.
We're still early, and one thing I'd especially love feedback on from Product Hunt builders:
