Pennies-AI

Track your finances without being tracked

Pennies-AI is a financial platform, managing all of your assets in one secure place. Features include: a dashboard for tracking assets, bank accounts, investments, loans, and mortgages; account sharing with anyone using fine-grained control; receipt scan just snap photos of receipts and auto-split transactions; cross-platform works on web, iOS, and Android; secure and private because data is encrypted at rest and not used for AI training or ever sold.

NOTE: I still work full time (which is why this project took so long!) so I won't be able to constantly monitor this launch. I'm very grateful for every single piece of feedback!

I built Pennies-AI because I realized I had the right background to do it the way I wanted it done. With over 40 years of programming and system design experience, including leading a built-from-scratch mutual fund processing system, I also had the financial background to be successful.

I tried connecting to my financial institutions through other programs, but the results were iffy. Eventually I asked myself: "Why am I paying all this money every year?" I was also tired of bloated software that promised the world but delivered little. I just wanted to keep track of my finances without distractions, upsells, and ads.

I decided to keep Pennies-AI inbound-only with no connections to any financial institutions. This way there are no account numbers, logins, or other identifiers in the data. That being said, it supports quite a few different formats for importing, including its own JSON-zip backups along with CSVs from several banks and other sites such as Etsy and Stripe. I'm also using JWE (JWT with encrypted data), strong encryption at rest, and enhanced sessions that resist being spoofed (although each user can have many independent sessions). The site is SEO ready, wicked fast, very stable, and I'm working hard on making it as accessible as possible.

Two years ago, I started building this for myself, and I'm happy to say my wife and I use it every day. I share all of the accounts with her. She takes pictures of her receipts and adds transactions as she shops, but sometimes she's too busy and that's fine, I can download the CSV from my bank and import them very quickly. Friends and family are using it as well, so I felt confident it was time to launch. There's even a video tutorial series on YouTube if you want to get deep into the features.

I created a 30-day trial system that doesn't need a credit card. Just a name and valid email address and you're in. We don't use phone numbers for anything yet, so even that isn't verified at this time. I highly encourage adding an authenticator app right away so you have multi-factor authentication. After the trial, you can choose to sign up through Apple, Google, or web via Stripe. Even if you don't, you'll always have access to see your data, which you can download in a zipped-JSON formatted file.

The company I work for as a consultant-employee liked it so much they had me do a multi-part blog series. Check it out here: https://keyholesoftware.com/how-to-turn-an-idea-into-an-app-part-1

We hope you try it out and let us know what you think here or at [email protected].
Thanks!
