Paperwing
The free, open-source alternative to Adobe Acrobat
Paperwing is a free, open-source PDF app for Windows and macOS with Acrobat's layout and shortcuts. Edit, sign, convert, organize, compress and protect PDFs with 100+ tools. No account, no subscription, no upsells, and your files never leave your computer.
Hey Product Hunt 👋 I'm Rohan, and I made Paperwing.
Every time I needed to merge two PDFs or sign a form, Acrobat asked me to sign in, start a trial or upgrade. So I built a PDF app that works like Acrobat, without any of that. It's free and open source, for Windows and macOS.
What you get:
→ 100+ tools: edit text and images, annotate, redact, sign, fill and create forms, convert to and from Word, Excel, PowerPoint and 30+ other formats, merge, split, compress, OCR, PDF/A, encrypt
→ A familiar workspace: tabs, an All tools panel, a floating annotation toolbar and Acrobat's keyboard shortcuts
→ Private by default: no account, no analytics, and your files never leave your computer
→ Small things that matter: results open in a new tab so your original stays untouched, session restore, reopen closed tab, a command palette, light and dark mode, and a portable Windows version
Paperwing is built on BentoPDF, an open-source project by Alam that does all of the PDF processing. Paperwing adds the desktop app and the Acrobat-style workspace on top. If you like it, please consider sponsoring BentoPDF too.
One heads-up: it isn't code-signed yet, so Windows and macOS will warn the first time you open it. The install guide covers the one-time steps.
I'd love to know: what do you still open Acrobat for? Your answers decide what I build next.
(Paperwing isn't affiliated with Adobe.)

Who hunted Paperwing?
Paperwing was hunted by Rohan Vijaykumar. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
