Last November, my last surviving grandparent passed away.
It made me rethink about life, and more importantly, about how much time we actually have with the people around us.
I started looking at my parents differently. Their greying hair, the wrinkles on their faces and hands, and all the little signs that they are ageing quicker than I would like to admit.
And I realised that I probably do not have as much time left with them as I think.
But just exactly how much time do I have left with them?
Going by age and numbers alone, the reality never really sunk in for me. I'm a very visual person, so I decided to build something that could give me a visual representation of our lives in weeks.
The result?
I'm panicking a little.
Seeing an entire lifetime laid out in front of you, with the weeks that have already passed and the ones that might remain, puts things into perspective very quickly.
Life really is short.
Spend time with the people you love. Make the phone call. Have that meal together. Take that trip you've been putting off.
Because one day, you might realise that there aren't actually that many weeks left to do those things.
That thought eventually became OYLIW.
