OwnDay - Daily Life Insights
Your day, recorded automatically and kept on your iPhone
OwnDay is a location diary for iPhone that fills in your day for you. It quietly logs the places you visit, names them, guesses the activity, and charts where your time goes by day, week, month and year. Add Apple Watch sleep and workouts, correct anything in a tap, and OwnDay learns your places so it asks less over time. Your archive stays on your iPhone, and you can ask Siri how long you spent somewhere.
Hi everyone, I'm Aaron, and I built OwnDay.
I started it as a private app for my own iPhone. I wanted an honest record of where my time actually goes, without having to log anything by hand. Journaling apps need you to keep typing, and most location trackers hand you a map but no meaning. I wanted something that just worked in the background and then made sense of it.
OwnDay uses iOS's low-power visit detection, not continuous GPS, so it stays easy on the battery. It recognises places you've named, guesses the activity, and shows the day as a timeline you can correct. Apple Watch sleep and workouts fold in too, and Insights shows where your time went across a day, week, month or year.
The hardest part was making it quiet. Early versions asked about everything. Version 2.0 stops asking about car parks and places that are right every day. There's now a "Not a real stop" option for a place you only passed through, and a "Never record here" option for places you don't want tracked. Your archive stays on your iPhone, and you can export it.
It's on the App Store now. I'd love to hear what you'd want from a tool like this, and what would make you trust it with your location.
