OverlayCheck

100% in-browser OSINT, image forensics & privacy suite

🕵️‍♂️Meet OverlayCheck: The Zero-Knowledge In-Browser OSINT & Forensics Workbench Most online forensic utilities, metadata scrubbers, and file converters have a dirty secret: they upload your sensitive files, unredacted documents, and private photos directly to their remote servers. For investigative journalists, security analysts, incident responders, and privacy-conscious users, uploading evidence or confidential documents to an unknown cloud server is a non-starter. OverlayCheck changes that.

Hey Product Hunt! đź‘‹

I'm Rutvij, Security Analyst and creator of OverlayCheck.

OverlayCheck originally started as a small, simple utility to preview social media cards and overlays. But as I spent more time working in digital forensics and defensive security, I kept running into a glaring, frustrating reality:

Almost every online tool for digital image forensics—whether checking Error Level Analysis (ELA), scrubbing EXIF data, or analyzing metadata—requires you to upload your files to a third-party server.

If you are a security researcher analyzing suspicious attachments, an investigative journalist handling sensitive leak documents, a privacy advocate removing location data from personal photos, or a CTF competitor inspecting stego challenges, uploading your files to an unverified cloud server completely breaks your chain of custody and compromises your privacy.

I decided to fundamentally pivot and rebuild OverlayCheck into what it is today: an authoritative, 100% in-browser digital forensics and privacy suite.

Here’s our technical commitment:

Zero-Cloud Execution: Everything runs locally in your browser via WebAssembly, Web Workers, Canvas 2D, WebGL, and Web Crypto. Your files never leave your device. You can verify this by checking your browser's Network tab—there are zero file upload requests.

Comprehensive Coverage: We now feature 17 specialized tools spanning EXIF scrubbing, ELA, steganography LSB slicing, PNG chunk repairs, PDF/Office metadata sanitization, and browser fingerprint/WebRTC leak auditing.

Completely Free & Accessible: No accounts, no subscriptions, no credit cards, and no artificial daily limits.

I would love for the PH community to put our tools through their paces!

Try running a photo through the EXIF Scrubber or ELA inspector, test your browser against the Fingerprint Analyzer, or test your damaged PNG files with the IHDR Chunk Fixer.

What other forensic, OSINT, or privacy tools would you like to see built directly into your browser? I’ll be here all day to chat, answer technical questions, and take notes on your feedback! 🚀
