OpenAI's most advanced model, o1 API to third-party devs
The full o1 model is now available to developers through OpenAI’s API, designed to excel at complex, multi-step reasoning tasks. Compared to the earlier o1-preview version, this release improves accuracy, efficiency, and flexibility.
o1 is production-ready with key features to enable real-world use cases, including:
1. Function calling(opens in a new window): Seamlessly connect o1 to external data and APIs.
2. Structured Outputs(opens in a new window): Generate responses that reliably adhere to your custom JSON Schema.
3. Developer messages: Specify instructions or context for the model to follow, such as defining tone, style and other behavioral guidance.
4. Vision capabilities: Reason over images to unlock many more applications in science, manufacturing, or coding, where visual inputs matter.
5. Lower latency: o1 uses on average 60% fewer reasoning tokens than o1-preview for a given request.
6. A new `reasoning_effort` API parameter allows you to control how long the model thinks before answering.
The o1 series of models are trained with reinforcement learning to perform complex reasoning. o1 models think before they answer, producing a long internal chain of thought before responding to the user.
The snapshot of o1 that was shipped on 17th Dec 2024 (o1-2024-12-17) is a new post-trained version of the model we released in ChatGPT two weeks ago. It improves on areas of model behavior based on feedback, while maintaining the frontier capabilities we evaluated in our o1 System Card.
o1-2024-12-17 sets new state-of-the-art results on several benchmarks, improving cost-efficiency and performance.
