MovieShort AI
Turn any movie into YouTube Shorts, TikTok with AI - free
MovieShort AI is a free, open-source tool that automatically extracts the best moments from full-length movies and formats them as YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Reels. It uses AI to score every scene, tracks people on screen with computer vision, crops to vertical 9:16, and generates word-level subtitles - all locally on your machine. No cloud. No subscriptions. Built on PySceneDetect, faster-whisper, OpenCV, and FFmpeg, it runs on Python and gives you full control over the output.
Hey Product Hunt! 👋
I built MovieShort AI because I was tired of paying $20-50/month to tools like Opus Clip and Klap just to turn movie scenes into Shorts. And every time I used them, I hit the same wall: watermarks, minutes limits, and zero control over the output.
So I asked myself — what if this just ran on my own machine, for free?
I'm a solo dev, and over a few weekends I wired up PySceneDetect for scene detection, OpenCV for person tracking, faster-whisper for word-level subtitles, and DeepSeek/Gemini to score scenes from 1-10 based on movie context (not just visual activity — actual narrative quality). I added a vertical crop pipeline with blurred backgrounds, a mirror+contrast mode that helps dodge Content ID, and batch processing so you can throw a whole folder at it.
The result: a ~102-minute film costs about $0.70 to process. No monthly fees. No watermarks. Full source code in your hands.
It's MIT licensed, so you can fork it, extend it, or build a SaaS on top of it if you want. I just wanted to put this out there and see what the community does with it.
Would love your feedback — especially on the AI scoring and subtitle accuracy. Let's make movie content creation accessible to everyone.
