Mosaic

Turn your photo into art — or a secret for a friend to find

Mosaic turns your photo into a mosaic built from thousands of public-domain masterpieces from world museums. Zoom in like on a map and tap any painting to see its title, artist and museum. Three ways to use it: Photo mosaic: a high-resolution picture you can save and share. Video mosaic: watch the mosaic assemble itself. Hide & Seek: hide a tiny photo inside your mosaic and send a friend the link. Can they find it by zooming? Free for now, no sign-up. Works right in your browser.

Hi Product Hunt! 👋 I'm the maker of Mosaic. Why I built this I work as a systems analyst, helping develop corporate products. My job is to describe how things should work, and other people build them. Thanks to recent advances in AI, I could finally build a product myself. More than that, I wanted to make something from scratch, by myself, and see what I could get. I wanted to build something cool and interesting. One idea stuck with me: making a photo out of paintings. It only really works when the paintings are recognizable. You look at a portrait of your friend, zoom in, and suddenly you spot a famous painting you know. What it does Mosaic rebuilds your photo from thousands of public-domain paintings from world museums. Zoom in like on a map. Tap any painting to see its title, artist and museum. Three ways to use it: 🖼 Photo mosaic: a high-resolution picture to save and share 🎬 Video mosaic: watch the mosaic assemble itself 🔍 Hide & Seek: hide a tiny photo inside your mosaic, send a friend the link, and see if they can find it by zooming The problem I wanted to solve Most photo mosaics are made of tiny anonymous thumbnails, so up close they look like noise. I wanted the opposite: every tile is a real artwork you can recognize and learn about. A family photo becomes a small museum, and Hide & Seek gives you a reason to share it. How the approach evolved Recognizability became the main goal, and it shaped every technical choice: Tiles are large enough to recognize the paintings. I limit how much each painting's colors are changed, so it still looks like the original. I avoid repeating the same painting next to itself. I switched from AI image embeddings to color matching, which was faster and gave better results. I added deep zoom, like online maps, so huge mosaics zoom smoothly. I built a prototype on a small library of paintings first, because mosaic quality was the biggest risk. What started as one photo mosaic grew into three modes. I built Mosaic solo, working closely with AI. I came up with the idea and made the decisions, and AI helped me turn it into a working product. Without it, I couldn't have done this alone. It's free for now and needs no sign-up. It runs in your browser. I'd love your feedback: Which mode would you use most? What would make you share a mosaic with someone? Thanks for taking a look!

Who hunted Mosaic?

Mosaic was hunted by Николай Гаврилов. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
