I built Monochrome Lab because I wanted a black-and-white editor that felt like it was actually made for black-and-white photographers. Most editing apps are built around color first, with monochrome added somewhere inside the larger workflow. I wanted the opposite: a focused place to open a RAW file, shape tone and detail, experiment with film behavior, and finish the photograph without all the extra noise. The project kept getting simpler as I worked on it. Instead of trying to build another giant photo editor, I kept asking, “What does a monochrome photographer actually need here?” That became Monochrome Lab: full RAW support, Film Lab, focused editing tools, and a workflow designed around black & white from the ground up. The macOS version is available now for a one-time $39.99 purchase. I’d love to hear what photographers think, especially anyone who spends a lot of time working in black and white.
