Hi Product Hunt.
Mitup started in 2015, when the Telegram Bot API was brand new, as a script to organize game nights with my friends. Our gaming clan ran weekly events with limited spots (Destiny raids: six players each, over a hundred people in the group), and signing up meant copying an ever-growing message and re-sending it with your name added. So I wrote a small bot to keep the lists. It ran on my desktop and stored the meetings in a file on my disk. That worked until meetings from strangers started appearing in the file. People I'd never met were finding the bot on their own, so it moved to a real server, and it has been running ever since.
One decision from those days shaped everything: the bot never joins your group. It lives in a private DM with each person. You create a meeting there, share one card into your group chat, and it handles RSVPs, the waiting list, and reminders in each attendee's own timezone. The group chat stays a group chat.
By the time it passed 40,000 users, the weekend script was barely holding together, so my brother and I rewrote it from scratch. It was his final-year college project, which is supposed to take one semester and took a few more. The new Mitup shipped this summer: free, no ads or trackers, MIT-licensed and open source, translated into six languages by the people who use it, with servers paid by Patreon members.
