Memolio

Personalised illustrated books about people you love

Memolio turns a grandparent's real photos and memories into a personalised, AI-illustrated hardcover about their life. Answer a few questions, review every page, regenerate anything you don't love — then it prints and ships. Unlike most other 'build-you-own-story' companies, Memolio uses people's genuine likenesses in beautiful watercolour styles. To create something like this in the past would have cost thousands — now it’s affordable for everyone. The heirloom that didn't exist before AI.

Hi Product Hunt 👋 I'm Hugh, solo founder of Memolio, building from Innsbruck, Austria.

How well do you know your grandparents, or how well did you know them? Growing up I saw my grandparents as grey-haired relatives, sat in a chair and slowly deteriorating. Looking back and hearing stories from my parent's I began to see how full a life they lived, how every life is full in its own way. With the improvement in Generative AI tech, I began to think - what if I had an illustrated book when I was a kid, telling me about my Grandpa's life. How many more questions could I have asked him, how much more could I have learned?

The exciting part is what is now possible about that. A custom illustrated book about a real person's life, their actual face, their village, how they met their partner, used to be something only a wealthy family could commission from a portrait artist over six months for thousands of pounds. It simply was not a product you could buy. AI is the reason it now is, at $49 plus shipping.

Picture your mother or your father in a book about themselves, one you can read to your own child. Heroes do not have to be super and they do not have to be rich. Heroes can be the people we love. Some people say AI art is soulless. I do not think that holds when everything in the picture came from a real life.

The hard part has not been the generating, it has been making it something an ordinary family can actually use. Anyone can prompt an image model and ask an LLM for a story, but that takes hours and a set of skills most people do not have and should not need.

Memolio works out what each page should show, builds the image, and lets you fix anything you do not like in plain words instead of reference images and style weights. You review every page and regenerate anything that is off, up to fifty times, and nothing prints until you approve it.

Grandparents are the first book. Next are couples' How We Met stories, and books for a new baby recording what everyone in the family was thinking and doing around the time they were born.

Product Hunt readers who made it this far: create a book free today with code PRODUCTHUNT at memolio.io/?code=PRODUCTHUNT. Fill in the story, review every page, and pay only if you decide to print it.

I would genuinely love feedback on the idea and the execution. Ask me anything, especially the hard questions about AI and authenticity. I think about them a lot.

Who hunted Memolio?

Memolio was hunted by Hugh Eggar. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
