Magnetism 3D Lab
Interactive Electromagnetic Field Lab for Physics Classrooms
Build electromagnetic scenes in your browser — wires, solenoids, magnets, charged particles — and watch the field come alive in 2D and 3D: heatmaps, iron filings, field lines, Lorentz-force trajectories. Free, no install, runs on Chromebooks. Made for AP Physics, IB, and university E&M. It's the field lab that's been in physics classrooms since 2003 — now rebuilt browser-native.
In 2003 I wrote Magnetism 3D, a Delphi desktop app for visualizing magnetic fields. It's been used in US physics classrooms ever since — but it needs a Windows install, which is a dealbreaker in a Chromebook world.
So I rebuilt it from scratch in TypeScript + WebGL. It now runs in any browser — no install, no login, free.
You build scenes from primitives (wires, loops, solenoids, toroids, bar magnets, charged particles) and watch the field update live: heatmap, iron filings, Linear Integral Convolution, field vectors, 3D field lines. There's an Ampère's-law widget for closed-path integrals and 2D/3D Lorentz-force trajectories for cyclotron and mass-spec setups. Every scene is deep-linkable and embeds in Canvas/Notion/any LMS with a one-line iframe.
Would love feedback from teachers and physics folks especially — what would make this genuinely useful in your class?
