What inspired it
Sean and I share a thesis: the next 10 years of food are about growing what you eat where you eat it. Not everyone has land. But every kitchen has a counter.
Mushrooms are the fastest, most protein-dense, most substrate-flexible edible for that counter. A five-pound block gives you meals in 10 days on a footprint smaller than a coffee grinder. No soil, no sunlight, and the spent substrate composts back into a garden.
The tool for it did not exist. Every home mushroom kit was a plastic bag with a spray bottle recommendation. The professional side had $4,000 lab chambers built for commercial farms. Nothing sat between those on a kitchen counter. So we built the missing piece.
The problem we solved
Mushrooms need a narrow humidity window during a 3 to 5 day pinning stage. One hour outside that range can stall pins entirely. A human with a job cannot hit it. A $4,000 lab chamber can, but it does not fit on a counter and does not talk to your phone.
Lykyn is the countertop version. Sensors read humidity multiple times a minute. An ultrasonic humidifier holds the range. Filtered airflow cycles every 2 minutes. LED matches each species. The iPhone app opens the pinning window when the block is ready and pings you at harvest.
How the approach evolved 28 months of engineering. Most of it went into the sensor + humidifier feedback loop, because holding a small sealed volume at 90 to 95% RH without overshoot is harder than it looks. The rest went to industrial design (this needs to look OK on a kitchen counter, not on a lab bench), the iOS app, and species-specific fruiting profiles for the six kits we sell today.
First-flush success rate on Lion's Mane blocks in our verified test set now sits at 97.8%. Works with any brand of fruiting block, not just ours.
