Lumos is a free, open-source menu bar app that automatically adjusts your Mac's brightness based on on-screen content — dimming for bright pages, brightening for dark editors. It learns your preferences over time. Support external monitors out of the box.
I built Lumos because I was tired of manually cranking my brightness down every time I opened a bright doc, then back up for my dark-themed editor.
What it does:
Lumos watches your screen content and adjusts backlight in real time to keep perceived brightness consistent — dim for bright pages, bright for dark editors. It's not just a fixed rule either: every time you manually adjust brightness, Lumos remembers what you wanted for that kind of content and refines its curve.
A few noteable features:
- 100% local — no telemetry, no cloud processing, nothing transmitted
- Per-app pause, so brightness stays fixed for video players, photo editors, etc.
- Independent brightness memory per display (built-in + external via DDC/CI)
- Free and fully open source (MIT)
Requirements: Apple Silicon Mac, macOS 14+, and Screen Recording permission (used only to measure perceptual brightness, not to view/store anything).
