If RRR or a Malayalam thriller on Netflix was your way into Indian cinema, you've probably hit the next problem: finding the film someone told you about. India makes more films than any other country, in more than a dozen languages, and a film often has several names: its title in its own script, a romanised spelling, and sometimes an English title it was given for festivals abroad. TMDb, the database most film sites use, often files a film under just one of them. So Sonar Kella, a 1974 Bengali detective film, is filed as "The Golden Fortress", with its own name stored only in Bengali script. Search for the 1960 Bengali classic Meghe Dhaka Tara and you get its 2013 remake instead. One well-known film has twelve alternative titles listed, in Portuguese, Korean, Polish and Chinese, and not one in the Bengali its own audience would type. So I built KinoKrate. Search for a film by any of its names and see where to stream it. There's also a calendar of upcoming Indian releases, because those dates are mostly missing too: when we checked, only 12 of 60 upcoming titles on TMDb had an India release date. It covers 11 Indian languages, it's free, browsing needs no account, and it's on the web and Android. Streaming info and the calendar are India-first for now; other countries come next. I'd like to hear from you: 1. What was your first Indian film, and how did you find it? 2. Is there one you've tried to find and couldn't? Tell me which and I'll check whether KinoKrate finds it. 3. When you watch films in a language you don't speak, how do you decide what to watch next?
