Hey Product Hunt 👋
What inspired this: I was tired of installing ad blockers that ask you to
just trust them. No explanation of what they actually block or why they
need the permissions they ask for — just a blocklist and "trust us." I
wanted one I could actually explain to someone, permission by permission.
The problem I was solving started narrower: YouTube ads and popup/
popunder ads specifically. But it kept growing as I found the gaps plain
network blocking leaves — ads served from a page's own domain, for one,
which no domain blocklist can touch.
My approach changed more than once along the way. First attempt at
stripping YouTube's ad data parsed and rewrote the JSON response — froze
the tab. Twice. Turns out uBlock Origin's own filters do a plain text key
rename instead of a full parse, so I switched to that: milliseconds
instead of a frozen page.
The popup blocker went through a rework too — blocking window.open()
outright breaks real sign-in popups, so it now checks for an actual
trusted click/keypress first.
And partway through I realized "it's working, trust me" wasn't good
enough, so I added a live blocked-now/blocked-overall counter and a
per-site breakdown — something to point at, not just a promise.
