Is Extension Safe?
Check is extension safe and don't collect your data
Chrome extensions ask for one line of permissions in a file you never open, and the store answers with a star rating. is-extension-safe downloads the actual package, strips the obfuscation, reads the source and shows you exactly what data each extension can reach, with the file and line behind every claim. No verdicts, no scare labels. We describe capabilities, print what the analysis couldn't check, and publish corrections. Paste any store link to request an audit.
Hey Product Hunt 👋
A few weeks ago I decided to check the extensions in my browser. I could tell you what maybe four of them actually do. Every single one had asked permission to read and change everything on every site I visit, and I'd clicked "Add" without reading a word, because the store showed me 4.6 stars and two million users and that felt like enough.
It isn't enough. A star rating tells you whether people like an extension. It tells you nothing about what that extension can reach.
So I built the thing I wanted to exist. It downloads the real package, unpacks it, strips the obfuscation, reads the source, and says in plain English what the extension can get to.
The hardest part was not finding scary things. It was the opposite. My first version flagged uBlock Origin as 100 out of 100 dangerous, because my rules were matching domain names inside its own ad blocklist. One of the most trusted extensions on the internet, and my tool called it malware.
That bug ended up writing the rules for the whole product. We never call anything malicious. We describe what an extension CAN do, we cite the file and the line behind every claim, and we print what the analysis could not check right there on the page. If you can't verify us, we haven't done our job.
So, two things I'd genuinely like to know. Which extension do you want checked first? And if you build extensions and I got yours wrong, tell me. I'll fix it and publish the correction.
