inlaut
Free, open-source dictation that never leaves your Mac
inlaut is a menu bar dictation app for the Mac. Hold a shortcut or the π key, speak, let go, and the text is pasted into whatever app you are in. Recognition runs entirely on your Mac, on the Neural Engine (NVIDIA Parakeet as Core ML), so it works offline and nothing is recorded or sent anywhere. It handles English, German and sentences that mix both. No account, no subscription. Free and open source (GPL-3.0). Needs Apple silicon and macOS 26.
Hi Product Hunt, I'm Tobias. inlaut is my hobby project: I dictate a lot, in German and English, and didn't want my mails and notes to go through a cloud service. Apple's own dictation kept getting technical terms wrong for me, so I built this.
How it works: hold a shortcut or the π key, speak, let go. The text lands at the cursor in any app.
What's different:
- Everything runs on your Mac (Parakeet on the Neural Engine). The only network calls are the one-time model download and the update check.
- English, German and sentences that mix both, with a single model.
- About 50 MB of memory while idle.
- Free and open source (GPL-3.0), no account.
Limits: Apple silicon and macOS 26 only, and it is plain dictation without AI rewriting.
I'd love to hear what is missing for your daily use.
