This app came out of using HeidiSQL every day and missing that lightness, that feeling of doing everything from the keyboard, but in something modern that also treated Mongo and SQL Server as real engines instead of a late patch. I wanted a real editor — Monaco — in every corner, not scattered plain text inputs. The underlying problem is that "all-in-one" clients tend to be heavy or locked to a single engine. With HuginnDB I'm going for one minimal binary that speaks to Postgres, MySQL, SQLite, MongoDB, and SQL Server through the same UI, with no cloud dependency — credentials live in the OS keychain — and where an AI agent can inspect it via MCP without seeing more than what the user chooses to expose. And the process was basically correcting myself as I went: I started with a simple SQL-focused clone, and every new engine or use case made me realize the first solution had been too naive. I dropped the simulated "workspaces" in favor of real native windows, then "environments" showed up later as a distinct concept. Mongo forced me to rethink how types travel between backend and frontend so edits wouldn't quietly corrupt data. SQL Server, having no sqlx driver, meant hand-writing my own connection pool. Even the release process pushed architecture changes unrelated to features. In short: the bare minimum that works for one engine, and the moment a second one shows up, pull out the right abstraction instead of keep patching.
