Grouparty

Free party games you play from your phone

Someone opens grouparty.com on a TV, a projector or a laptop and picks a game. The screen shows a QR code and a 4 character room code. Everyone else scans the code, or types the room code at grouparty.com/join. They pick a nickname and they are in. Each phone works as a private controller. It takes under a minute to start. There is nothing to install. There is no account and no sign-up. It works in any modern browser. Players only use a nickname, so nobody has to share personal data.

I’m a software developer with around 8 years of experience in the industry. Team leads often use different ways to break the ice before a meeting demo or a retro. I lost my job, and in one interview a requirement was Ruby on Rails, Turbo and Action Cable. I wanted to be very good at these technologies, so I asked myself: what can I build to study them? I started creating games, just to study and improve my skills. Then, suddenly, at my new job we started using these games as icebreakers, and I realized they were fun. We also started playing them with family and friends. To be honest, I don’t know yet how to make money from this. But I really enjoy building products that people like and use. I have learned a lot about releasing a product, SEO and other things. The app is available in English and Spanish, and step by step I will add more games.

Who hunted Grouparty?

Grouparty was hunted by Daniel Arenas. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
