Gray Box
Capture thoughts, Search later. Remember Better.
Dump your thoughts. Let your notes organize themselves. Gray Box captures raw ideas, automatically builds a cross-linked Markdown knowledge base, and lets you chat with your own knowledge using grounded, evidence-backed answers. Local-first, graph-based, works with any LLM, no vendor lock-in, no database required, and keeps your knowledge portable forever.
I built Gray Box because I kept capturing ideas, meeting notes, project decisions, and random thoughts—but finding them later was always painful. Existing note-taking tools expected me to organize everything myself, while AI note apps often hid my data behind proprietary formats.
Gray Box takes a different approach.
• Capture anything in seconds.
• Let AI organize it into a cross-linked Markdown knowledge base automatically.
• Ask questions and get grounded answers with citations.
• Your notes stay local-first and portable — just Markdown files you own. AI can run locally (Ollama) or via your chosen provider.
A few design choices I'm particularly proud of:
📄 Plain Markdown storage (no vendor lock-in)
🔒 Immutable inbox so your original notes are never modified
🕸️ Graph-based retrieval with optional semantic search
🤖 Works with any LiteLLM-supported provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Ollama, and more)
🧠 Human-in-the-loop curation tools for fixing AI extraction mistakes
I'd genuinely love your feedback — especially from anyone who's tried the "capture now, structure later" approach with other tools
Thanks for checking it out! Happy to answer any questions. 🙌

Who hunted Gray Box?
Gray Box was hunted by Aaryan Verma. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
