"I stopped trying to block websites. I started asking who's actually watching." Every blocker I tried failed the same way: timers block everything blindly, hard lists block the useful along with the useless, and five minutes later I'm hunting for a bypass. None of them knew what I was actually doing. Then I remembered my grandmother: behave, finish your homework, and you get to go out and play. That's the whole idea behind Granny. What she does: → Morning intake at 7am: "what are you doing today?" Until the list is written, the notebook keeps coming back — you can't dodge it. → While work is open, entertainment dies: at the network layer for the usual suspects (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts), by content for everything else. → Context beats lists. A full YouTube video is negotiable; a Short is not. Every task declares its own allowed URLs, so writing a LinkedIn post is not "scrolling LinkedIn". Focus music plays on; a movie gets a raised eyebrow. → 11pm bedtime: she goes to sleep and tells you to do the same. Clean days bank a streak. How the approach evolved: v1 was a hosts-file hammer — too blunt to trust, and I kept fighting it. It became useful the day it could read the page: a self-hosted classifier handles the fast, cheap verdicts, and an LLM only steps in for the ambiguous cases. That's also why it's honest about its limits — the machine owner can always bypass it with sudo; Granny just makes it loud and annoying instead of pretending to be security. Native Swift, macOS 14+, free and open source (AGPL), bring your own keys. It's an early build, so it has bugs — feedback, issues and PRs are genuinely welcome.
