GrabText
Extract text from anywhere on your Windows screen
Lens Text is a Windows desktop tool that lets you extract text from anywhere on your screen. Press Ctrl+Shift+X, select an area, and copy text from error dialogs, videos, screenshots, and otherwise unselectable PDFs. Collect multiple snippets with Multi-select mode, or use Scroll mode to gather text across long pages. Powered by a multi-engine OCR fallback system, with high-DPI and multi-monitor support.
Hey Product Hunt! 👋
I'm excited to share **Grab Text**, a little Windows utility I've been building to solve a problem that kept annoying me.
Sometimes you need to copy text from an error dialog, a video frame, a screenshot, or a PDF that won't let you select anything. Instead of retyping it manually, I wanted a simple shortcut that could grab text from anywhere on the screen.
So I built Lens Text.
🔍 **What you can do with it:**
- Press `Ctrl+Shift+X` and drag over any area to extract text.
- **Multi-select:** collect snippets from different parts of the screen and copy them all together.
- **Scroll mode:** gather text across a long, scrolling page without losing previously collected snippets.
- Use a cascading OCR system with RapidOCR, Windows OCR, and Tesseract.js as fallbacks.
The OCR itself was only part of the challenge. Getting selection coordinates right across high-DPI displays and multiple monitors, and preserving collected text across scrolls, took considerably more work than I initially expected.
I built Lens Text with Electron, Node.js, and a persistent Python worker. It's my attempt to turn a small everyday annoyance into a useful desktop tool.
🚀 **I'd love your feedback!**
What would you improve? Are there any text-extraction workflows or features you'd like to see added?
