AI Mode is clearly the punch back to Perplexity. Google is trying to take the search experience to the next level, using a custom version of Gemini 2.0 to tackle complex, multi-part questions that might normally require multiple searches.
It's currently available as an opt-in experiment in Labs for Google One AI Premium subscribers. They're gradually rolling it out to more users.
Google is emphasizing that it's still early days, but what can we say? The battle of AI search – maybe we should call it Asking in the AI Era – is really heating up!
I'm really curious to see where AI-powered ad platforms go from here. With users now interacting directly with a powerful AI agent before even seeing search results, the dynamics of ad targeting and placement could change dramatically. It will have a HUGE impact on all of Google's clients – big and small, companies and individuals.
This is going to be a massive shift in the business world.
