Hey PH! 👋 I'm borenchan, maker of SDKMate (sdkm).
Let’s be real: sdkm isn’t trying to replace mise or sdkman. They are fantastic, mature tools. But if you’re a full-stack dev juggling Java/Node/Python/Go on Windows, you’ve probably hit these walls:
Windows is an afterthought: sdkman doesn’t support it natively; nvm/pyenv need third-party forks; mise’s Windows support is limited to core/vfox plugins.
Shims break IDEs & which: Tools like mise use shims that intercept PATH, making which java point to the shim instead of the real binary. IDEs and debuggers often get confused.
Switching doesn’t notify running apps: Change a version globally? Your already-open IDE or terminal won’t know until you restart everything.
AI Agents hate shell functions: Most version managers rely on shell hooks that don’t propagate to child processes, making automation fragile.
sdkm focuses strictly on fixing these gaps for the "Full-stack + Windows + IDE + AI" workflow:
✅ Windows as a first-class citizen: Native registry writes + WM_SETTINGCHANGE broadcast so already-running apps detect the switch instantly.
✅ Zero-shim transparency: which java always points to the real SDK path. IDEs just work.
✅ Single 4MB binary, fully portable: No runtime deps, no shims directory. Copy to a USB drive and it works. Existing SDKs? Drop them in store/ and sdkm adopts them.
✅ AI Agent native: Ships with a self-contained skill doc. Claude Code / Codex read it once and can safely install/switch SDKs with clear exit codes and auto-rollback on failure.
Honest take: If you’re happy with mise/sdkman/nvm on macOS/Linux, you probably don’t need sdkm. But if you’re tired of the Windows + multi-SDK + IDE friction, I built this for you.
