I built git-token-auth to solve a daily friction point when working in shared development environments like VMs or jump hosts.
Since GitHub deprecated password authentication, standard Git HTTPS prompts require entering a username—even though GitHub ignores it when you provide a valid Personal Access Token (PAT). Typing "a" or a dummy username before pasting a token every time gets annoying fast. Plus, storing global credentials in shared environments is a security risk.
git-token-auth is a zero-dependency CLI credential helper that overrides local repository settings to prompt ONLY for your PAT.
