Git Peel

Time-travel your code, right inside VS Code

A powerful VS Code extension to browse commit history, preview previous file versions, and restore with one click. Time-travel through your codebase.

Top comment

Hey Product Hunt! 👋 I built Git Peel because I kept doing the same annoying dance: run `git log` on one file, copy a hash, run `git show`, scroll through a wall of diff noise... just to find one old version of a file I half remembered changing last week. So I built the thing I actually wanted. Open a file, run one command, and instantly see every commit that touched just that file. You get relative timestamps, a live preview of any old version, and a one click restore (with a confirmation step, so you can't accidentally nuke your current work). A few things I cared about while building this: - **Zero dependencies.** It just uses the git you already have installed. - **Under 200 lines of code.** No bloat, no background process, nothing weird quietly running in your editor. - **Per file, not per repo.** No digging through a hundred unrelated commits to find the one you actually need. - **Open source (MIT).** Code's right here if you want to poke around: https://github.com/DaltonVector-... It's a small extension for a small but recurring annoyance, the kind of thing that saves you a couple minutes, a dozen times a week. Would love for you to try it and tell me what's missing. One thing I'm genuinely unsure about: would people want branch level history too, or does per file cover most real use cases? Thanks for checking it out 🙏
