Gesture Synth was hunted by Emily Yao. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community. Hi Product Hunt! 👋
I’m excited to share Gesture Synth—a playful browser-based instrument that lets you make music simply by moving your hands in front of your webcam🎹✨.
There’s something surprisingly magical about hearing the sound respond to your movements. Your left hand selects chords, while your right hand shapes the music: raise different fingers to change the voicing, move your hand higher or lower to control volume, use your thumb to shift the octave, and tilt your hand to adjust the filter. It can feel a little like conducting, playing an invisible keyboard, and experimenting with a synthesizer—all at the same time.
There’s nothing to install and no MIDI controller or special equipment required. Just open the website, allow camera access, keep both hands visible, and start exploring. Your camera processing stays on your device.
Whether or not you know music theory, the fun is in experimenting: try different finger combinations, move your hands around, and discover how each gesture changes the sound.
This launch builds on the original Gesture Synth instrument created by Eric Wei, whose work made this experience possible.
I’d love for you to try it and let me know: Was it easy to understand? What sounds or controls would make it even more fun? Every piece of feedback is welcome. Thank you for checking it out! 🎹✨
