I’m Mengmeng, one of the cofounders at Gather. I moved to the US from China 15 years ago. I love getting to blend the best of both cultures in my life, but when it comes to online apps, I very much prefer the apps back home 🇨🇳
If you haven’t used Taobao (like Amazon) or Xiaohongshu (like Instagram), let me tell you, those apps are MAGICAL. They surface the exact content, recommendations, and products that I want without me having to do any work. Tbh, they predict my needs better than my husband 🤣
Those apps are powerful and delightful because the big tech companies over there share my user data with one another (without any user consent, unfortunately). After my last startup got acquired, I began to wonder if there might be some way to have the best of both worlds: super-personalized, magical app experiences AND control over my data. 🤔
I realized that it was possible IF apps had a way to get relevant data ❗directly from users ❗ So that’s what led me and @esumit to build Gather.
With Gather, users can share their data in exchange for value (financial or functional) and revoke access at any time. That means developers can build those magical, personalized experiences in a way that always ensures user privacy and consent. And as users all reclaim ownership of the data they generate, the power dynamics of the internet will start to tilt towards consumers. ⚖️
We have big dreams for how this will improve the internet for all of us, and it will take several years for our vision to play out. Today Gather is launching the first puzzle piece 🧩 which we call “Single Player Mode.”
In Single Player Mode, you can do three awesome things:
1. Access your data from key websites/apps including Amazon, Strava, and Uber
2. Create custom dashboards that automatically refresh on a daily basis to track the metrics you care about
3. Download your data in various formats (csv and JSON) to feed into an app you or a friend is building
A lot of our early users have asked the same question: “can you build me a personal AI bot?” We aren’t announcing anything about that today 😉
Today, we’re looking for 100 hunters to try out this early version of the product and help us shape the future of user data on the internet. Be warned, though, we are still VERY early. If you sign up, expect very bare-bones functionality and some bugs 🙂
