Maker here. This started because my cat kept napping on the warm part of my desk while I worked, and the moment I stepped away the Mac just went black. I wanted her still there when I came back. That's the whole idea — no productivity angle, no problem I can dress up into something bigger. The screen saver itself turned out to be the easy part. A macOS .saver bundle is Swift + AVFoundation looping an H.264 file; that took an afternoon. Everything around it took months: - Without an Apple Developer ID and notarization, macOS greets every install with "Apple could not verify this app is free of malware," and most people quit right there. That $99/yr is the single reason anything here is paid at all. - Video is expensive to serve, so the whole store runs on one Cloudflare Worker — Next.js via OpenNext, D1 for the catalogue and entitlements, Stripe Checkout. No origin server, no VPS. Two things I'd rather say up front than have someone find later: The artwork is AI-generated. The two free ones are modelled on my own cat and dog; the paid ones are breeds I liked. If AI art is a dealbreaker for you, completely fair — the free ones cost nothing and need no account, so it takes about two minutes to judge for yourself. It's buy-once, not a subscription. Charging monthly for a screen saver seemed absurd. $3.9 for one, $6.9 for the whole set. Happy to answer anything — build details, pricing, or why the cat looks like that.
