Furmandarian - Same sounds, new words
Same sound, same word
Furmandarian is a small side project that started as an idea I had. Instead of requiring plugins or special markup, it embeds Mandarin pinyin directly into the font. This keeps the original text searchable and copyable while allowing the pronunciation guides to appear anywhere the font is supported. What makes it different is the bilingual approach. Pronunciation appears above each character or word, while familiar words like "coffee" can also display their equivalent in the other language
Furmandarian is a small side project I put together on the side just as an alternative to duolingo.
The idea was to take something similar to Japanese furigana and apply it to Mandarin and eventually to all languages. The biggest twist being that common words in either languages are identified.
For example, 咖啡 (kā fēi) sounds similar to "coffee." Furmandarian can show the pinyin above the Chinese characters and the English word underneath.
The nice part of it is that it's all within the font so it can be used anywhere.
