FreeCreditBot started with a problem I understood personally: rebuilding your financial life is already hard, and the systems you're expected to navigate rarely make it easier. I originally built an early version after coming home from federal prison while participating in a Defy Ventures apprenticeship. The project eventually went dormant, but the problem never did. When I came back to it, I started with one rule: **if I don't need your data, I shouldn't collect your data.** That changed how I built the entire product. Most of FreeCreditBot runs directly in the browser. No account required. No financial profile sitting in a database. No LLM behind every button. For many tools, your information can go from input → deterministic rules → useful document or answer without ever needing to become data that I possess. The project has also grown beyond “credit repair.” I'm increasingly interested in FreeCreditBot as public-interest infrastructure: practical tools for people navigating credit, and eventually for the case managers, housing navigators, reentry programs, workforce organizations, nonprofits, and advocates already helping them. I'm building it in the open, keeping the core product free, and trying to prove that useful financial software doesn't have to monetize people's hardship by collecting as much information about them as possible. Would especially love feedback from people working in credit, consumer law, housing, reentry, financial coaching, or community services. What should this become?
