EasyConvert
A native macOS app that converts pretty much all media files
EasyConvert is a native Mac app that converts images, video, and audio without needing Terminal or extra installs. It covers more than 60 formats total, including RAW camera files, HEIC, MKV, AV1, and FLAC, using Apple's own Metal and hardware encoding where possible and a bundled ffmpeg for everything else. Hey everyone, I'm the person who built this. Wanted to jump in and give some background since this is actually the first app I've ever shipped.
The whole thing started because I kept running into the same annoying situation on my Mac. I'd have some random video or image file in a format I needed to change, and I'd either have to dig up a sketchy web converter that uploads your file somewhere, or open Terminal and remember the right ffmpeg flags for the tenth time. I wanted something that just lived on my Mac, looked and felt like a real Mac app, and handled whatever I threw at it.
I didn't want to build another Electron wrapper around a website, so I went with Swift and SwiftUI from the start. That part was actually the easier half. The harder part was realizing pretty quickly that Apple's own frameworks, as good as they are, don't cover everything. Core Image and AVFoundation handle a ton, RAW photos, HEIC, hardware accelerated video encoding, but the moment you need something like MKV or WebM or a bunch of older codecs, there's nothing built in for that.
So the app ends up using Apple's frameworks first wherever it can, since that gets you GPU acceleration and hardware encoding for free, and falls back to a bundled copy of ffmpeg for everything else. Getting that to work without asking people to install Homebrew or anything separately took a while, mostly fighting with dynamic library paths so the whole thing runs standalone.
A couple of features I'm genuinely happy with came out of just using my own app and getting annoyed. The target size compression exists because I got tired of guessing quality settings when I needed a file under a specific size. The multi resolution export exists because I kept needing the same image at two or three different sizes and doing it one at a time felt dumb.
It's free and fully open source under GPL, so if you're curious how any of this works or want to fix something yourself, the code is right there. I'd genuinely love to hear what formats or features people want next, this is very much a living project and I'm still actively working on it.
