Hi all — I built this after watching a client's domain lapse while everyone assumed someone else had the renewal.
The thing that makes it different is boring: it reads RDAP, the structured replacement for WHOIS, straight from each TLD's registry. No parsing forty vendor-specific text formats, and the states that come before a drop — redemption period, pending delete — arrive as data rather than prose you have to interpret.
Two details I ended up caring about more than I expected:
Registrar reminders only cover their own registrar. Anyone holding domains for other people has them spread across five or six, so the one place that knows everything is a spreadsheet nobody updates. Every alert tells you which registrar to renew at.
The alert ladder has to forget. Notifications fire at 30/14/7/1 days and each rung records that it fired so it does not repeat — but that record has to clear on renewal, or the thing goes silent for a year. That is the only failure mode that actually matters here, and it is invisible until the year is up.
Some things I would rather say plainly than have you find out:
- It is one person. There is no server — a static app, a scheduled job, and Firestore rules doing the authorisation.
- Billing runs through Gumroad as merchant of record, because Stripe will not onboard me from India without a registered company.
- Entitlement is pulled from Gumroad on the scheduled run rather than pushed by a webhook, since a webhook needs a server. A cancellation can lag by up to one run.
- .de, .co and .gg have no usable RDAP service, so it says "the registry publishes no expiry" instead of guessing.
