DontFlockMe

Navigation that routes around license plate readers

DontFlockMe routes around automated license plate readers the way other apps route around tolls. Type a destination and get the fastest route and the unwatched route side by side, with the detour cost in minutes. A middle option dodges only the cheap cameras. 115,000+ camera locations from open mapping data and driver reports, synced nightly. Routing runs on my own server, so your destination never reaches a third party. No account, no tracking. Free on the web, Pro on iPhone.

Hey Product Hunt, maker here. What inspired it: automated license plate readers went from a few thousand in the US to over a hundred thousand in a few years. They sit on ordinary roads, log every plate that passes, and almost nobody knows where they are. I wanted the choice other apps give you for tolls: show me the cost, let me decide. What it does: type a destination and you get two routes side by side, the fastest and one that avoids every known camera in the corridor, with the detour cost in minutes. There is a middle option that dodges only the cheap ones. Turn by turn works on both. How it works: - 115,000+ camera locations from open mapping data plus driver reports, synced nightly - routing runs on my own server, so your destination never goes to a third party - no account, no login, no analytics on your drives - free on the web, and on iPhone the avoidance routing and patrol mode are the paid Pro features that keep the server running How the process changed: I built and tested it across town. The day Apple approved it I routed 1,000 miles and it took two minutes, because the camera check compared 11,000 cameras against every segment of the route. A small spatial index fixed it. The lesson was that the test suite proves the code works, not that I tested what a real driver would type. Honest limits: a clean route means no known cameras, not no cameras. If you know of one that is missing, you can report it from the map. Solo dev, building in public. Ask me anything.
