Day Before, the private journal
A private journal, with a place for our issues.
There are a few things in each of us that come back — a pattern, a weakness, something we haven't answered. Day Before gives each one a name and a place to write it through. A journal, with issues. Write down what happened, work out what you make of it, come back to refine as new understanding comes. Over time, the entry gets simpler. Clearer. Encrypted on your device before it goes anywhere. No one can read it — not even us. Export as Markdown, PDF, or raw data. Nothing is held hostage.
There is a moment most of us know, though we rarely talk about it. We lose our temper with someone we care about, or we catch ourselves taking all the credit for something that was not ours alone, or we notice a flash of envy toward a friend who is doing well. That evening, lying in bed, we think it through and see it clearly: why it happened, what we believe about it, what we might try differently.
Three weeks later the same thing happens again, and we discover that we have forgotten most of what we worked out.
The insight was real. It just had nowhere to live between one occurrence and the next.
I built Day Before for two things:
The first is a journal, for ordinary days. We write down what happened and what we made of it, and then leave it alone until we want it again. Most days deserve a page, even a short one.
The second is a section called Issues — for the few things in us that keep recurring. We give each one a name, and we write what we honestly think is behind it. Not the comfortable answer, the real one. When it surfaces again, we return and add to what we wrote. Often the problem is deeper than we first named it — what looked like an inability to share credit was really a selfishness we had not fully confronted; the restlessness we felt in noisy places was not about the noise but about the stillness we had not yet built in ourselves.
Over days and weeks, coming back to the same entry, the understanding gets closer to something true. And even once that area of our life settles, new depth opens up — if we built stillness, we now want to hold it even in the moment right after something provokes us. We come back to remember what we decided, to train it into ourselves, and to refine it further when we can.
It's private in the strict sense. Your entries are encrypted on your device before they go anywhere, which means that nobody can read them — not even me. That cuts both ways: if you lose your password and your recovery key, nobody can get your entries back. I would rather state that trade-off plainly than hide it behind a reassuring sentence. The app locks itself when you step away, because journals on shared devices tend to be left open, and what we write here is not meant for anyone but ourselves.
You can export all of it whenever you like, as Markdown files or as a PDF, and take it somewhere else. Nothing is held hostage.
The app is free and keeps everything on your device with no account. Syncing across devices costs two dollars a month, and students pay one a month. Prices adjust to where you live, and if you stop paying, the app keeps working and you keep everything.
A journal, with issues. If we have ever solved the same problem in ourselves twice, it may be worth a look.
