Data Backed Design
One UI/UX question, one clear answer backed by real products
Data Backed Design is a research assistant for UI, UX, and design process questions. It cites evidence from real teams. Each answer - Gives you one clear direction - Explains the reasoning - Cites specific companies and systems by name - Calls out when sources disagree and what the tradeoffs are For product designers, PMs, and engineers who keep getting pulled into “what’s the right pattern here?” debates and want to ground those decisions in what trusted products actually do.
Hey everyone, I’m the maker of Data Backed Design.
I built this because I kept seeing the same problems: we argue about patterns, we ask ChatGPT, and we end up with confident but source-less answers. Meanwhile, the products we trust like GitHub, Stripe, Notion, Figma, GOV.UK, etc. have already done the hard work of documenting what they do and why.
Data Backed Design turns that existing evidence into something you can actually query.
Ask it things like:
- ‘Should this form validate on blur or on submit?’
- ‘Where should bulk actions live in a dense data table?’
- ‘How should we structure design critique so it doesn’t become an approval meeting?’
You’ll get one clear direction, the reasoning, named sources, and the tradeoffs if companies disagree.
I’d love feedback on:
- What topics or patterns you wish were in the corpus next
- How well the answers line up with how your team works today
- Any confusing or missing states in the UI
Happy to answer any questions in the comments and to hear what you’d like this to grow into.
