Hi Product Hunt! We're the team at D-Secure, and today we're launching File Eraser — a tool built around a problem that sounds simple but isn't: making sure deleted data actually stays deleted. Here's the thing most people don't realize — hitting "delete," emptying the recycle bin, or even reformatting a drive doesn't erase your data. It just removes the reference to it. The actual bits sit on the disk until something overwrites them, which means anyone with basic recovery tools can pull that "deleted" file right back. For individuals, that's an inconvenience. For businesses handling customer records, financial data, or anything covered under GDPR, HIPAA, or India's DPDP Act, it's a real compliance risk — especially when laptops get resold, employees offboard, or old servers get decommissioned. We kept running into this gap while building D-Secure's broader data sanitization suite (Drive Eraser, Smartphone Eraser, and more), and realized there wasn't a lightweight, cross-platform tool focused specifically on selective file and folder erasure — something that doesn't require wiping an entire drive just to securely remove a handful of sensitive files. So we built File Eraser. What it does: - Permanently erases specific files, folders, free space, and system traces — not just full-drive wipes - Works across Windows, macOS, and Linux from one tool - Follows NIST SP 800-88 sanitization guidance, so the erasure method is documented and repeatable, not guesswork - Generates a report for every wipe — so you have something to show an auditor, a client, or your own compliance team, instead of just trusting a "success" pop-up Why we think this matters beyond just "another erasure tool": most tools in this space are built for IT departments doing full-device wipes before resale or recycling. File Eraser is for the in-between moments — an employee leaving with sensitive files on their laptop, a shared drive that needs selective cleanup, a compliance audit that needs proof for specific files, not the whole disk. A bit about us: D-Secure is a small, early-stage team based in India. We're not a 20-year-old incumbent with a shelf full of certifications — we're a newer player trying to build erasure tools that are genuinely useful, well-documented, and honest about what they do (and don't) do.
