You shouldn't have to open 5 apps to convert a 3D model. Or upload your hard work to a stranger's webserver. Or have your screen covered in ads. That's why we made this 100% private, in-browser, all platforms 50+ formats.
Let me rant for a second, bear with me. We work with a lot of 3D models, and we noticed how my time just evaporates when trying to wrangle them into the right format for the right medium. Right? Open Blender, save as one format. Open another app, save as another format. Now use a command line tool. Oh, you need Python for this? Spend an hour setting that up. Come back for weird errors when you're ready.
At the last step, you realize that you made a mistake and had to start all over.
There's got to be an online converter that can do this in seconds, right? There is. And honestly, that thought scared me even more. I have to upload my expensive, proprietary model to a semi-anonymous web server, and they store it there for hours, or maybe forever? It also doesn't help that I have to make my way through a wall of ads.
So Jens and I asked each other, how could make 3D model conversion 100% private, but still not an app you have to install? And that's how we went down the rabbit hole of Web Assembly, a modern way to run highly efficient close-to-the-metal code right in the browser. Turns out that's a great technology for converting complex and heavy 3D formats. There's just no uploading—in fact, you can turn off your internet connection after loading the page, and conversion still works.
Since we don't have heavy server costs, we decided we might as well make it free AND not run any ads.
