We built Rusteerio at Context.dev, and today we're open-sourcing it.
We process a lot of HTML. We've always loved Cheerio's simple API, but as our workloads grew, parsing performance started becoming a bottleneck.
We didn't want to rewrite everything just to make it faster.
So we rebuilt the engine in Rust while keeping Cheerio's familiar JavaScript API.
The results from our benchmarks:
- ~4x faster parsing and extraction on 3,000 real pages with one CPU
- 777 upstream Cheerio tests passing
- Identical output across 5,000 pages in a separate processing benchmark
- Built-in parallel extraction with native workers
- Zero npm runtime dependencies
We also used LLMs extensively to build it, making the initial port possible in under a day.
It's free, MIT licensed, and available on npm and GitHub.
We built this to solve a problem we had internally, but figured other developers might benefit from it too.
